Target settles suit with National Federation of the Blind

Published by Christine under General

National Federation of the Blind filed a law suit against Target in California’s superior court in Feb 2006. In September of 2006, a federal judge in California allowed the NFB’s case to proceed, rejecting Target’s argument that its Web site wasn’t subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act. It then became part of a class action suit in October 2007.

Well they settled today.

  • Target doesn’t admit their site was ever inaccessible (although it still is)
  • Target shells out 6 million dollars. I don’t think this is enough to encourage companies to make their websites accessible.
  • Target will make their website compatible with screen reader software (and input from NFB). No mention of making the website compatible with other assistive technologies (screen magnifiers, those using Dragon Natural Speaking etc.)

The settlement requires Target to implement internal guidelines to make its site more accessible to the blind by Feb. 28, 2009.

Friday Night

Published by Christine under General

It was over a year ago Julie, babs and I made our mecca to Las Vegas, Mamma Ma was one of the shows we went to and it was darn funny. We had a great time, and when the movie game came out few weeks ago, I thought it would be a great way to take my former bridesmaids for a night on the town. We started at Tex Wasabi and and a little bit of food with our drinks. I love their szechwan green beans, spicy hot green beans sautéed with “sambal” sauce, garnished with peanuts and fresh cilantro. Not for the squeamish. YUM! 3 cocktails (each) later we walked to the theater, the movie just starting as we sat down. Great movie, very funny.

After that we walked around 4th street. At one point seeing Jim drive by us. Some guys stopped us asking where to find entertainment, I pointed to Tex Wasab’s for the good drinks.ick We walked past this guy with two wingmen on either side. He looked faintly familiar and as we passed him babs looked at me with the same “I recognize him” look.   We compared notes, it was one of the “Millionaires” on the bravo tv show The Matchmaker. On his “date” he flew the woman to Sonoma County for wine tasting. I think he lives in LA and Sonoma.   His two wingmen on either side were doing an admirable job protecting him from the hoards of women of Santa Rosa.  We also think he had a rocking pic of Slash from Gun and Roses on the back of his black leather jacket.

Matt Nathanson

Published by Christine under Geek

Julie and I swung by Latitude yesterday. While we sipped yummy cocktails we watched Math Nathanson perform mere feet from us. I have several of his CD’s but he is great in person! Very funny guy (and cute). I got a chance to talk to him. It was cool!

Late very late postings…

Published by Christine under Creative, Family, Geek

elvis Its been a hectic few weeks. But a few people have asked about Comic Con so here are some thoughts.

  • Very Busy. Over 100k people, many who stood in front of me in the lines to get into the panels.
  • Saw the premier of 3rd season of Hero’s. Its going to be very cool.
  • Saw a few friends, not nearly enough time to see them all.
  • Met a few of the webcomic authors I read. It was nice to put a face to the writing
  • Scored many many pre-released books
  • Really liked our mellow hotel
  • John commissioned an artwork of our characters to celebrate our 2 year anniversary of engagement. It looks verrra nice!
  • John went to the “SCREAM” Like a Girl panel and asked a question the panel of women. He announced to the audience of +2000 that he had proposed 2 years again and if they have any advice on geek marriages. Although I wasn’t there, the crowd went “awww’ (I have spies!). Several of the panelists offered their advice… not that he needs it!
  • Walking home very late, John was hit by a car. The guy exited the freeway, the street goes only one way. We, of course, were going the other way. I warned John that I didn’t think the guy was looking our way. No no he wasn’t and he tapped John. I screamed like a banshee and John slammed his hands on the hood. The guy stopped and had this look of utter panic. But everyone was safe and sound.
