So …. John gave me a ring when he proposed. Unfortuntely it didn’t fit, heck it barely fit my pinkie. So I took it a jewelry shop, who informed me it could not be resized without dramatically changing the look of the ring. The ring has a diamond on top of a large gold leaf that is part of the ring itself. At its size (5) and my needed size (6.75 or 7) its wasn’t going to work.
So we went looking for rings. First I did online research and learned about the 4 c’s and discovered the limitless design possibilities. Then on Friday John and I went to the jewelry shops in the Santa Rosa Mall. Now I freely admit, I overschedule way too much, but Friday from 7-9 was the only time we had free for the next 3 weeks. We stopped by 3 stores. The first one (rhymes with Fales), the shopgirl was friendly but didn’t seem to know diamonds very well. Except for price. The second was very friendly and instantly saw thru our attempts to act like we knew what we were talking about. They gave us this chart of colors and clarity and a quick tutorial on shopping for diamonds. although I knew we weren’t ready to buy, I discovered what I wanted. (white gold and a solitaire. I just dont like the cluster of diamonds look) The next shop, the guy started out with badmouthing his competition in the mall and showing his signature diamond. It has 96 facets, but I really couldn’t tell the difference.
The weekend flew by with the various activies. On Monday I was relating our hunt to a coworker. She mentiend she had a ring, it was white gold and a solitaire that her future mother-in-law had given her 35 years ago but she never wore it. She brought it the next day and I really liked it. The backstory was appealing to the historian in me. Her uncle-in-law’s family had owned a residency hotel in New York since the 1920′s. Often people down on their luck would use jewelry for rent. This elderly woman did this in the 1960′s. So this ring is at least 60 years old. I took it to the shop, it can be resized and yes its real.

It was like destiny calling “here is your ring”. I showed it to John, he loved it. We bought it Friday, dropped it off for resizing on Saturday and now have to wait 2 more weeks. I think I can handle that.

Totally uninformed except that I’ve looked at a *lot* of vintage jewelry: the piece looks very Deco or Deco-influenced. Particularly the square cut of the diamond, which is unusual both later and earlier than Deco.
I think you are right, its got that Deco flavor. You can’t really tell from my less than clear photo, but the diamond is actually round. I don’t care what quality/color it is according to that scale, I just like the look and its so shinny.
Oh, way sweet. It’s very pretty! Did she just give it to you?
I really like the square cut, because it’s definitely from an earlier era.
The diamond is actally round, it’s just in a setting that grips it on the “corners” rather than the “edges.”
Both parties have agreed on a very reasonable price. We’re getting it appraised but, as Christine said, “I’d love it if it were paste!”
Ya can’t beat that!
