I finished a freelance website yesterday. I took a look back in my records and realized I had been working on it since May, 2006. Grr.
This was the perfect example of why I would not want to work freelance fulltime. I love the work, but not so much the mechanics of the business end. Defining the scope of the project and the sticking to it is so hard when you want people to be happy.
This client changed his mind several times. I redid images, pages, content, editing and put a hella lot more work into the site then what was originally discussed. I doubt I made much money when you add all the edits. He would mail me with changes, I would make them with a turnaround of one day and then email him a list of questions. All of which he promptly ignored. Then a month later he would be all gunho for the next step. I frankly just stopped caring. Which is sad, because I really like the guy. You have to distance yourself from clients, and I just don’t like that.
Then I get other freelance jobs, like the cafe. I finished it in 2 weeks, they loved it and now I have a rehearsal dinner for the wedding party. Another job I finished over xmas break with no problem. I guess it depends on the people.

Probably why freelancers (I’ve just dealt with artists) can be hard-asses — they have to be! Revisions seem to be the biggest sticking point, with professional artists charging an hourly rate, go ahead and change your mind, the meter’s runnin’.
